HERE IS an alternative way of cleaning silver, and we can’t wait to share it with you
Nope. We’re not talking silver polish cloths, silver dips, or silver polish you normally find at DIY stores. It’s something our Chinese grannies used to use — on their faces! That particular brand of face powder (we don’t have the brand name), but you’ll know it when you see it, with its instantly recognisable packaging. It costs less than S$2, and is easily found in provision shops around Chinatown.
It comes in two shades: white and pink. Only the pink works for the purpose of cleaning silver. Just sprinkle some powder on the silver, rub it with your hands or a soft cloth, and your silver will look like new — that is, if you want it to look like new!
Just to show you, we’ve taken a few pictures of the polishing process, using a 1970s brooch designed by Bjorn Weckstrom, so tarnished there were black marks all over the front and sides. Below are the results.
